This is one of the better Anime’s to come out in the states and get air time on TV. The show appears on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim due to it’s graphic violence. I am sure though that if you are looking at getting this set you probably are already watching it. This is probably the best buy for getting the episodes. This set includes volumes 1 and 2 or episodes 1-9. The set also includes volume one of the Manga, OST 1, and what is best described as a radio show containing the characters on a cd. It also includes 3 booklets over the shows main characters with interviews from the creators. The case itself is sturdy with artwork on all sides and on the interior. If you live in a major city I would suggest picking this up from Best Buy as it is a little bit cheaper, not much though. If you are going to have it shipped than amazon would be the best bet.

This is a wonderful and amazing anime. Lots of excitement and drama and characters that live in all kinds of shades of grey. I truly enjoy this anime. The box set is excellently done with a very pretty box and loads of wonderful extras. I especially appreciated the manga.

So why the 3 star review? well this first pressing of discs appears to be defective. Bandai is experimenting with new copy protection and it causes serious problems for many DVD players. In particular seizures at episode 3 in disc 1 and episode 9 in disc2. That is provided that it works at all. People using blu-ray and in particular PS3 players appear to have much better success rates though.

Galaxy High was a very creative and funny Saturday morning cartoon back in the 80’s. It played on a lot of the era’s pop culture while at the same time going for that after school special sort of positive role messages. The writing was fun and the animation was a notch above what was the norm for the time. All in all good mix of fun.

The cast of characters are funny in of themselves. Doyle is the teenage jock who was super popular on Earth while Aimee is the shy bookworm. When they get to be exchange students in an interstellar high school everything changes as Aimee becomes the popular one and Doyle is the bafoon.

Add to the mix the friends like Booey is an alien girl with a lightbulb like head that is as ditzy as you can get. Gilda is a girl with four extra mouths coming out of her head, which obviously means she’s the gossip. Wendy looks like the kind of girl every sci-fi boy fantasizes would abduct him and do things to. The Creep is an adorable little flying ball of yellow cotton who can only talk coherently in song. Milo is a six armed geeky looking guy who is class president and a bit clumsy as well. Flat Freddy is a kid who is… well… flat. He’s a walking pancake.

Then you have the “bad guys” or bullies as it were. They are mainly harmless, and add a lot of comical color in their badness. The Beef is kinda like a giant alien chicken who’s only purpose in life seems to be to act macho and mess with Doyle. Roland is kinda like a giant egg that follows the Beef around. Earl is a little blobby thing with eyes that hangs out the Beef gang as well.

Anyway this ensemble cast puts out some pretty funny shows. Personally I think there are fun episodes on volume one, but that shouldn’t discount anybody from getting this volueme. Heck… get both. Here are the episodes you will get on this DVD:

8 - Beach Blanket Blow Up: Spring break is here, but the vacation planet’s sun is about to go supernova.

9 - Brain Blaster: Doyle gets addicted to a helmet that zaps (or blasts) your brain. This is the GH equivalent to doing a show on cocain addiction and it’s done well enough to not get too preachy. It also won an award.

10 - The Brat Pack: Title is definitely a play on 80’s pop culture name for a group of teen movie stars. The Beef has to babysit a group of little kids who cause more mayhem than he can handle.

11 - Founder’s Day: The gang gets zapped into the past and now have to make sure Galaxy High doesn’t end before it begins.

12 - Martian Mumps: Everybody but the humans (and a teacher) get martian mumps and it’s up to them to find a cure before it’s too late.

13 - It Came from Earth: A parody of those old monster movies where in some alternate reality Doyle becomes a giant rampaging around New York. Funniest line from some Japanese tourists (Kid: “Look! It’s Godzilla” Parent: )No my son. This is America. That’s Rambo”).

You get this volume along with volume one and you have the entire series on DVD. No extras or digital remastering on this disk, but it sure beats trying to find those old VHS tapes.

I love this dvd. It brings back memories of good Saturday morning cartoons. My son even loves this. Now can somebody put the Get-Along-Gang on dvd?

Lovecraft. Christopher Lee stars as the seemingly benevolent Professor Driscoll, who sends his eager student Nan (Venetia Stevenson) to the town of Whitewood, Massachussetts to research local legends of witchcraft. In a coincidental parallel to Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (which was released the same year), the young heroine is killed off early in the film when she is used as a human sacrifice by a present-day coven of witches led by Lee himself. (Talk about teacher’s pet!) As it turns out, the entire town is overrun by monklike zombies who perform grusome nocturnal rituals in the local graveyards. Nan’s bereaved boyfriend struggles to eliminate this monstrous brood–at the cost of his life! Even connoisseurs of low-budget alien invasion flicks will be hard-pressed to recall one in which the weapon of choice for Earth’s champion is a Swiss army knife. This alone makes The Colony a prime candidate for cheesiest movie ever shown on the Sci-Fi Channel.

Consider the opening credits–a naked blonde dances in slo-mo, languidly running her slender fingers over her–well, let’s just say that what we’re supposed to get from this dance solo is that the aliens are intrigud by the sensual possibilities of assuming human form. O-o-kay…. In any event, the premise here is that aliens have chosen Earth as their next target for invasion; quite naturally, they’ve decided that Southern California provides the optimum beachhead.

Our champion (Michael Weatherly) is one of four earthlings taken hostage aboard an orbiting space station by the alien invasion force. He and his companions have been abducted for study by an alien doctor, gamely, if not convincingly, portrayed by Isabella Hofmann. Of course, all the technical wizardry of a galaxy far, far away doesn’t stand a chance against the Swiss army knife. The discerning viewer, therefore, will quickly overlook the plot to consider the deeper thematic qustion in The Colony–namely, why is our planet so often saved by blondes from Los Angeles? –Stephan Magcosta
